The theme of this alley cat was a well-guarded secret; it turned out to be a great race, and everyone had a ball. I caught wind of the SF library alley cat, and wanted to do the same in Salt Lake City. I hid it behind Talk Like A Pirate Day and the birthday that Patrick and I share on the 21st, so when the riders got their instructions they had no clue what they would be required to do. There are six libraries in the Salt Lake City Public Library System, and the racers were required to go to each one and check out an item: the checkout slip would be their tag. Two libraries were on the west side of town, a fair distance but no hills; one was on Ninth Avenue, up a steep hill; one is the new one downtown; one at twenty-one blocks east; one at twenty-one blocks south. The route came out at twenty-three miles. Here are the standings(I grabbed the times for the first and second, and when the last one came in, but I missed the others. Sorry!):
1. Ryan Miller, 1:35. Fixed-fixed hub.
2. Miah Johnson, 1:37. Brooks Saddle.
3. JJ. Floor pump.
4. Patrick Beecroft.
5. Robert Ling.
6. Jason Copier.
7. Brandon.
8. Brian Price.
9. John Long.
10. Bryon Wright.
11. Shawn Teigen (?), 2:05. A set of Sante components for DFL.
Ali started the race, but did not finish. She deserves an honorable mention for being the only woman to participate, and for attempting the race on a bike that outweighed any five of the other bikes.
I didn't intend for there to be an entry fee, but got one anyway, so I've donated those proceeds to BMEF. Hope that helps, Jean. Thanks everyone for participating!
