Basel, 03 Jun 00

It was hot. Almost subtropical heat at seven o'clock in the afternoon made everyone sweat. But 20 people made it to the meeting point at the Wasserturm, the highest point in Basel. Thus the start was fast, and I remember overtaking some poor oak (Patric) fixing a flat tyre just 500m after the start, and of course Olivier flying past me in an incredible speed (guess who won the race...).

Anyway, after the second check point I was the one with the flat tyre and as I didn't carry the thingies to lift the tyre with me, I struggled getting the damn thing off the wheel. As I was sweating quite a bit, everything was slippery which didn't really help as well... But alas, after quite a while I was ready to continue the race when I met up with Patric and we decided to finish the thing together. Ya right. As a woman I didn't really know what was happening to me, I just followed him and overtook him only at the red lights and other risky occasions. As we lost about 15 min. with our flat tyres, we flew past the finish where already half of the people were having their first beers and I just thought: see you in half an hour. The heat got on me, I feared a circulatory collapse. This would have happened if Patric wouldn't have been 'out of air' soon again and I profited from the unfortunate occasion to have a sip or two of his bottled syrup. When we finally arrived at the finish, almost everyone had already gone to the barbecue at Mark the Shark's place. But I was glad about Gabriel handing me over a beer and that made me happy enough to face life again. The asphalt had been so incredibly hot that I was left with a head as red as a tomato for hours (right, Gilby?). And that cold shower didn't help much either. After we all enjoyed Marks bbq (thank you stax, Marc), Karl handed out the prizes: cigars for the winners who were: Olivier for the fastest oak on the track, Tobi for the fastest fixed gear racer and last but not least myself as fastest and only woman. (It's really cool to win so easily but hey, where have all the women gone?)

The alleycat was lots of fun and I'd like to thank all the people who took part and helped us, especially Simone, Kristina and Isabelle, who did great jobs.

Seeing you again for the Global Gutz on July 8th, your organisation.
