Houston, 18 Dec 99

We held the Second Annual Winter Solstice Alleycat Race in Houston on Saturday December 18th. Everybody started at Tranquility Park, went to 515 Rusk (federal courthouse) for the first filing and then to someplace else. OK, I'm not real sure how many checkpoints there were and where they all were, and I was on the race committee. Anyway, one pickup was a dead fish's head, courtesy of 'Da Kidd' (Roadrunner), another pickup was a Fedex tube. There were 3 courthouse filings including one that could be either 1115 Congress or 301 Fannin, you didn't know unless you read the cover sheet. Only one courier got it right the first time. One of the stops was to buy a 99 cent burger, anyplace, but must be 99 cents. Butch, who is vegetarian, walked into mickie d's (stinky fish-head in bag) and ordered a Texas homestyle burger, hold the meat and cheese. J.B. (Travel Agency in the Park) had to drop out after being overcome with airsickness and Dustin (Houston Delivery) got a terminal flat tire in the final stretch. June Bug didn't finish for 'unspecified' reasons. Out of 14 starters, 11 finished, no injuries, no arrests (during the race) and it all finished up with a nice keg and bonfire in the 6th ward.

And the winner was...

Andrew "Little Drew" Escobedo, Houston Delivery and President of the Houston Bicycle Courier Association. Andrew also won the alleycat in April and represented Houston in Toronto. He won the grand prize, free ride to Boston for the World Championships, and immediately handed it over to the second place finisher:

Butch (Citicouriers?), terror of corporate fast food joints.

Third place was Andrew "The Wolf" Medina, also Houston Delivery, Treasurer of the Houston Bicycle Courier Association and the senior downtown courier in Houston.

Congratulations to the winners and we'll print more details in the January Humidity.
