Decisions taken are bulleted at the bottom of the minutes, and subjects on which there was general agreement (but no official decision) are in boldface.
We can always improve on the effectiveness of getting the word out about the event. This year had a drop in number of registrants - why weren't there more riders?
The event should not turn into a platform for individual egos and personal advancement, but should remain striving for a common set of goals for the messenger community. Perhaps we should define a general goal or mission statement in unity with the global messenger community? The basics of such a statement could be 1. to hold a CMWC every year 2. to foster cameraderie within the messenger community and 3. to promote cycling.
CMWC should always reflect the flavor of the host city.
Races should do their best to reflect the job itself. Obstacles should be kept to realistic ones actually encountered on the job. This years course was the best yet - it required more thinking and less flat-out speed, which makes for a better test of messengering. Courses should try to incorporate more routing decisions and options - perhaps varied terrain options - a road bike route and a mountain bike route? Perhaps an in-building checkpoint, or longer walkups, stairs even? Every effort should be made to make the checkpoints realistic. Forced dismounts at checkpoints to avoid clogging and add to realism might be a good idea as well.
Coed racing/qualifying with separate elimination and ranking in the final is a good idea - it gives the women a chance to race with the men, but also win their own awards.
There was general agreement on the disqualification of excessively rude competitors, although the rules packet should be explicit in the future as to what exactly will get a racer dqed. Perhaps a prize for the most polite messenger might come about? Volunteers should also be given precise guidelines concerning grounds for disqualification of riders.
Do we need a standardized set of basic rules? It would appear that we're slowly putting one together out of these suggestions.
More fun events should be included, ones focused on messenger skills. New ideas are always welcome in this area.
If you're going to publicize a prize list, make good on it. All winners deserve their time on the podium.
Good sound and timing systems are a must. Megaphones and stopwatches just don't cut it at the type of event we're striving to be.
In the past there have been problems with the Lemans-style start - backups at checkpoints, bikes getting stepped on, and there's the recurring question of whether or not it's actually relevant to the job. The Lemans-style start this year was much smoother - bikes and racers laid out in an orderly grid seens to be the solution. Perhaps a Lemans-style start incorporating bikes locked to poles could be arranged?
The agenda needs to be more available - were starting over every year from the same points. We also need to connect with more of the non-online community.
How to support hard-copy information distribution? Subscription service for local BMAs to get info? donations from BMAs and individuals? An administration fee for setting up the open forum? A fee to participating cities? Fee to propose for CMWC?
Membership clarifies whos taking the decisions, and solves accountability issues. How to take the decision? By proxy or by attendees of the open forum? Over the internet? Absentee votes?
