A wet and rainy Saturday and Pat Craven sits at home wondering if anyone will show up to his first alley cat as host. Sure as snot, by 1400 hours there were six competitors waving their five dollars in Pat's face. Snatching up their clue sheet and bearing down with map book in hand to decipher the course. Racers tooks their marks - at go we raced to the first checkpoint. My route went a little something like this.
My first stop was 72 Manchester, with Eric Zo and Broiler in tow, a short alley with the checckpoint conveniently located in the middle of the hill. Next was the freeway annex, "what's in the upper right hand corner of the mural?" answer: the sun. I put garbage can, That's -1 point for a wrong answer. A quick stop at the church 1332 Vermont, saving the hill for last. I don't beleive that was such a wise decision - nonetheless my now soaked legs sped me off towards 3rd and Cargo way, my 4th stop of the seven, over halfway there. Pedaling up towards 3rd I spotted Eric Zo riding the opposite direction. Two more stops, Humboldt @ Illinois - this was a trick checkpoint. Our host planted a box of bolts in hope that someone would find them and bring them back to the finish for a prize. The problem was because of the way he worded this clue, no one actually stopped at Humboldt, and if they did they didnt bring back the bolts. Checkpoint #5, 22nd St Caltrain station. Over the hill I go checkpoint #6 my last stop before the finish at the park at the top of Vermont St. - at this point I started to question my sanity as I lugged my way up n over 20th St. Course complete i could retire to Craven's house for scoring. Though still raining i manuevered my way down Vermont through the Mission back to Treat scoring 3rd place. I stripped off my wet layers, was handed hot soup and brandy for my troubles. The course covered 7.5 miles. Our top competitor finished in 35 minutes. A good course for an ugly day. Congratulations Pat.
